InteXen is a collagen dermal matrix from manufacturers American Medical Systems that is designed to help treat hernias where connective tissues have ruptured, or to treat weaknesses in urological, gynecological and gastroenterological anatomy.
In other words, this is a mesh implant from AMS that was designed to help provide women with extra support and structural integrity to help treat prolapse and related issues. Unfortunately, like so many mesh implants, InteXen has had to be recalled from the market following numerous reports of complications, injuries and side effects from patients.
IF you are someone who has used InteXen or another AMS product in good faith and have suffered side effects as a result, then you may be entitled to compensation. Read on and we will look in more detail at what InteXen in and at what caused the problems surrounding it.
Complications and Problems
As with many mesh implants, InteXen users are at risk of numerous complications and issues. Mesh implants have been shown to cause erosion due to deterioration while inserted. This erosion occurs on the inside of the vagina (where the product is often inserted) as well as to the organs that it comes into close contact with.
This in turn results in a number of severe and dangerous side effects, including:
- Vaginal scarring
- Vaginal shortening
- Vaginal tightening
- Infection – possibly leading to more severe symptoms and complications
At the same time, mesh implants have also been found by the FDA to be actually less effective than many alternative treatments – such as stitches or even exercises for the nearby muscle groups. In many cases, the implants would fail to perform their intended role at all, resulting in reoccurrence of the hernia, prolapse, or incontinence. This would result in the need for multiple surgeries.
In the case of InteXen in particular, another issue also occurred wherein the packaging showed the incorrect sized product. This resulted in a recall with customers being notified by phone in 2008 and instructed to cease usage of the product.
AMS has been on the receiving end of lawsuits from thousands of women who have been injured or traumatized by the use of their products – including InteXen. The company has already paid out millions in settlements.
These dangerous and even life-threatening mistakes were allowed to happen only because the company did not thoroughly test its products before taking them to market. This negligence has led to permanent scarring, financial strain, emotional and physical trauma, irreversible deformation and other problems for countless women.
